8 Reasons why you should avoid the use of topical steroids

Our skin is the biggest organ and it’s important that we’re aware of what we put on our skin and how this can greatly affect our health in a positive or negative way.

For those who suffer with skin ailments such as eczema that becomes, dry, itchy and inflamed, we’re often advised by Dermatologists or G.P.’s that topical steroids can be used.  For some people using steroids it can control the flare up permanently but for many people it worsens it. 

  1. It goes directly into your bloodstream which can have long lasting effects on your skin and well-being.
  2. Long-term use can cause thinning, stinging, burning of the affected area.
  3. It can also cause redness, discolouration and hyperpigmentation to the affected area.
  4. It says to apply sparingly but this can be open to interpretation and used differently from one person to another.
  5. Can affect children’s growth who are on strong doses.
  6. Over a period of time it can make the affected area more sensitive.
  7. They come in different potencies and this could be misused resulting in irritation or thinning of the skin.
  8. Increased hair growth where the skin is being treated.
